The Golf Swing Test

This article is about the Golf Swing Test.

The sequence in which you make your golf swing has a HUGE effect on the distance you hit the ball. If you are like most golfers, you want to hit the golf ball the longest you possibly can. Therefore, you want to be sure to get the sequence right. Realizing the sequencing of the golf swing is crucial to hitting the ball long.

OK, first thing we must look at is what is happening in the backswing and in what sequence.

To start the backswing you must do so with your big muscles…namely your back and shoulders. You do NOT want to start your backswing with your hands.

Along with turning your shoulders and back you also need to shift your weight to the right foot as you are starting the backswing. And you should continue to move your weight to your right foot (for a right hander) all throughout the turning of your backswing so that when you reach the top of the backswing position you have about 90% of your weight on your right foot.

The backswing move can be described as a shift and turn.

Now at what part of the golf swing does the most power come from?

The right answer is the transition. When you change directions from the backswing to downswing that is what is known as the transition.

So, if this was not true you would have golfers setting themselves into a perfect top of the backswing position and then swinging from there. Nevertheless, that will not happen since it is in the change of directions from moving the club back to bringing it down where the power is created in the golf swing. Most amateur golfers lose a heck of a lot of distance at that place in the golf swing. This is a result of incorrect golf swing sequencing. Permit me to clarify.

Assume you have reached the top of your backswing position. What should start the downswing?

The answer is obvious: The weight shift!

To start the downswing you need to first move your weight back to your left foot. Your left knee should now move towards the target with the left hip and left shoulder and ultimately your hands should move.

Amateur golfers miss this point and usually start the downswing with their hands which is death as far as distance is concerned. You must initiate the downswing with the weight shift and then the left knee.

OK, time to go out and try it now...

The drill must be done by slowly bringing the club back to the top and then when you've almost reached the top of your backswing move your weight back to your left foot and move your left knee towards your target. As in most drills we first want to get the feel and instill some muscle memory before we increase the speed of the swing.

If you get this sequencing correct from the backswing to downswing you will gain a lot of distance and the golf swing will be a lot easier for you. Try it…you'll love the results!
